From pads to tampons and period pants, here are eight of our go-tos for a first period kit or starter kit to help you or a loved one feel more period confident. Period pants are washable and reusable absorbent pants that can be used instead of, or alongside, disposable products such as sanitary towels or tampons. Silver treatments, in the form of silver ions (silver zeolite and variations, silver chloride) and nanosilver, are added to textiles to give them antimicrobial properties. In the case of period pants, manufacturers told us it's to combat user concerns about the pants smelling over time. In December 2021, we surveyed users of period pants to find out what they liked and disliked, and how they rated the brands they'd used on factors such as leak protection, comfort and value for money.

Schools and colleges then choose how the products are made available to pupils. Some have them in the welfare room, others in toilets. Some organise drop-in sessions where pupils and students can go to collect products. I don’t think my school/college offers this – what should I do? Some brands only offer one absorbency level, which pretty much replaces one tampon, but others have pants designed to be worn for longer periods of time or heavier flow, and hold up to 12 tampons. Period activewear – leggings and shorts with built-in protection – are also having a moment. Like the best period pants, they’re designed to absorb and hold menstrual blood to prevent leaking, so you can focus on your performance and keep moving throughout your cycle.

It's worth remembering that, like ordinary pants, period pants won't last forever. Some manufacturers give you a rough idea of how long they're expected to last – from the brands we looked at this tends to be around two years, or 50-60 washes, but some don't specify and one brand (Love Luna) suggests a year at most. Firstly, the fact that you're buying something reusable and washable intrinsically has a higher cost than buying single-use tampons or pads. Plus, period pants are made with additional layers of breathable, leak-proof fabric, making the cost of production higher. Good quality (37%) ' I think they're great, and would have been fantastic to use as a young person whilst at school. I actually bought them first for my daughter. She was only 10 when she started her period and I wanted her to be as comfortable and confident as possible.'

You never forget your first period – and before that day arrives, it’s an event that can be surrounded by fear and trepidation. But hey, that’s totally normal! And if you or someone you know is approaching or going through puberty, here’s our expert-led guide to everything they – and you – need to know to feel reassured and ready. Reusable pads are made of natural bamboo, cotton and even recycled PET (the plastic from old bottles). They're fixed to underwear by poppers, should last around five years and can be bunged in the wash after use. Bloom & Nora have even partnered up with the Department for Education to supply schools across the UK with free reusable pads, helping to combat period poverty and raising awareness of the waste created by disposable period products. Meanwhile, Wear'Em Out reusable pads will cost you 40% less than standard pads.As your period comes to an end, your oestrogen levels rise during the late follicular phase, so you’re likely to have higher energy levels and may feel more energised to work out, so this could be the perfect time to schedule tempo sessions and long runs. If you find that these mediations still do not help relieve your pain and it’s impacting your quality of life, then you can speak to your doctor about starting the combined oral contraceptive pill which you can take tricyclically (continuously for three months at a time with a one-week break in between)." Known as 'menarche' – from the ancient Greek for 'month' and 'beginning' – it starts as part of puberty, and its arrival is unpredictable to say the least. "Your first period can start anytime from the age of seven to 15, but 12 is often recognised as an average age to have a first period," explains Sarah Priestley Turner, spokesperson for UK-registered charity fighting against period poverty, Freedom4Girls.

From Bodyform to Chantelle lingerie, we have curated the best places to shop period pants online now. In our survey, people were mostly positive about their overall experience of using period pants, with 75% saying they liked or loved them. It provides access to tampons, pads and more through schools or colleges if, for example, pupils can’t afford period products, have forgotten to bring them to school or college, or have come on their period unexpectedly. What are schools saying about the Period Products scheme? Period pants are a sustainable and fuss-free alternative to sanitary towels and tampons when your time of the month hits. How much they'll save you versus disposables depends on a few factors, such as how well you care for them when washing, how often you change them, how many tampons or towels you'd typically go through in a cycle, and the type you buy.

It’s only been a few years and already period pants have had quite the makeover. We’ve become so switched on about the damage single-use period products are causing to the planet, that we have certainly been paying attention to ways we can be more sustainable to help protect it. This will depend on your flow, but period underwear can be worn all day if it's the right level of absorbency for your needs. Most period underwear brands suggest changing when you feel wetness — this is a sign it has absorbed all it's able to.

But period pants are not solely for your period as they can also be worn by those postpartum, or those suffering with incontinence. Progesterone and oestrogen cause a build-up of a lining in the womb to prepare for a fertilised egg to attach and start developing. Ovulation occurs when one of the ovaries releases an egg. A menstrual period – commonly known as a 'period' – occurs every month as a result of changing hormones in the body," explains Dr Zahra Ameen, consultant gynaecologist and obstetrician at the Cadogan Clinic. It also has a range of pants made from recycled fabric off-cuts discarded by fast-fashion manufacturers.
