Spiked shoes might penetrate about 4cm deep, while a proper pitchfork hollow tine plug lawn aerator will go as deep as 10cm. It has 30 metal spikes in total, which are each 45 mm long, and works well to aerate moist ground. Alongside this, the rolling lawn aerator is 30 cm wide, so it’s narrow enough to manoeuvre around smaller areas. As a result, this is one of the best aerators for small gardens. Like above, these are best suited for small gardens as they do require quite a bit of manual work. Similar to the pitch fork, they have spikes placed underneath that pierce the ground while you walk across it. All you do is strap them to your shoes, please wear boots, and walk over the area that needs to be aerated. I would recommend lawn aerator shoes with non-slip platform and heal support for a more secure fit. To tell if your lawn needs aerating, try to push a pitchfork into the grass when it’s dry. If it can’t easily penetrate more than halfway down the fork, then your lawn may need aerating. Also, if your lawn easily becomes waterlogged after heavy rain, this is another sign that aeration is needed.

There’s no need to overcomplicate things when it comes to some gardening tools, and the Ames 4-Spike Lawn Aerator is a great example of when simplicity works well. The AL-KO Comfort 38E Combi-Care 2 in 1 Scarifier/Aerator allows you to scarify your lawn in a separate process before you aerate it. Removing the lawn thatch that stands as a barrier between the grass and the soil lets the spikes on the aerator roller go fully down into the ground. This combo model has a 38cm working width with 24 steel spikes on the aeratorBoth the aerator and scarifier functions work well. In most cases, this machine will aerate and scarify at the same time (depending on the height setting it is set to). The scarifier is very capable of removing large amounts of moss and lawn thatch. There are 42 stainless steel claws on the roller which help produce this result. As you may already know aerating your lawn is a very important job that creates holes in your soil to help lawn grasses to grow and flourish. It should be carried out on a regular basis if you want to keep your lawn healthy throughout the year, especially for us here in the UK. Speaking of cables, if you choose an electric lawn aerator, look out for a power cable around 10 m long . This way, you should be able to avoid using an extension cable in most medium gardens. It should go without saying that the following tools, even though they are sharp, won’t penetrate hard lawns, but then little will! In these cases you’ll need to water first or wait for rain. Lawn Aerator Sandals or Shoes

There are 4 working depths to choose from, but I found all but the shortest one too deep for aerating and definitely more suited for scarifying, but that’s usually the case with these types of aerator. Changing depth is very easy though and there is a handy lever for just that purpose. It’s worth noting that this aerator isn’t ‘hollow-tined’. The 8 cm spikes don’t remove any earth, so the ground isn’t any less compact. However, it’s still very effective. The spikes are 6 mm wide and create holes that allow air, water and nutrients to get deeper into the soil. This type of aerator has an additional benefit over hollow tine models – there’s no need to remove plugs of soil from the tines after use. Instead, simply insert the spikes into the soil and remove. There are anti-slip pads on the part of the shoe that connects to the sole of your own shoes, helping to prevent slipping. Although a fair amount of manual work is required to use this lawn aerator, it allows you to be very precise, ensuring you don’t poke too many or too few holes. It also has a foot bar, making it relatively easy to push the aerator deep into the soil. Plug lawn aerators can be more tiring to use than rotary spiked aerators. Pushing a plug lawn aerator into the ground can require quite a lot of force, as can pulling it out again. A certain amount of upper body force is required, and this method can be too physically demanding for some people. These do involve a lot of physical effort, and it can be quite a slow process if you plan on aerating a bigger lawn. Using one of these is really hard work so be prepared for that if you are considering buying one of these. If you have hard, clay soil or water puddles in the grass after rain, then you should choose a plug aerator like our best overall, the Brinly-Hardy 40-inch Tow Behind Plug Aerator. By removing larger pieces or plugs of dirt, plug aerators can help nutrients penetrate more easily into the roots of the grass. If the soil is sandy or loamy, then the more narrow puncture of a spike aerator will give you the aeration needed. For example, the Agri-Fab Spike Aerator is a great tow-behind spike option.

A large 55-litre grass collection box won’t see you running to the compost heap often with the thatch, moss and plant bits. Great if you’ve got the lawn size that warrants it. Anything over about 500 square metres is going to be tough with manual aerators. Your choices whether buying or hiring are: When Aerosmith sang ‘walk this way’ I think it’s a pretty safe bet to say they weren’t talking about aerating a lawn, but that doesn’t mean it is a great idea. For most lawns, you want to aerate about once a year, or every spring. However, if your soil is very compacted, or your lawn gets a lot of foot traffic, you may want to aerate more often – up to 5-6 times per year, during the spring, summer, and autumn. The Yard Butler coring aerator does a great job improving oxygen flow to your soil and revitalising the health of your lawn. It removes 3.5″ deep plugs of soil, rather than just poking holes without removing the soil, ensuring excellent aeration results.Whether this will be beneficial for your soil or not can depend on what type of soil you have. Adding sand to clay soils can cause it to lump together more, not less. Choosing the Right Type of Aerator

Firstly, pitchforks have solid tines. Although they can penetrate quite deep, they don’t remove cores of soil. You need an aerator with hollow tines for the best results. Low cost and easy to operate, roller spike aerators are quite popular products, but there are some common issues. Firstly, some of the cheaper models are not all that well put together and may be a bit on the flimsy side. On top of that, they are sometimes too lightweight and so the pines hardly penetrate the ground without some alteration to the design to make them heavier, or manually pushing down on the handle. They are all pretty similar in design: Roller spike aerator – they are all pretty similar in design Electric or petrol-powered aerators are the least physically demanding aerators. The motor will do the brunt of the work. However, they are generally more expensive, and require more maintenance, so they’re only worthwhile if you intend to aerate frequently over larger areas. If you’ve got a small to medium size garden and you’re after an electric machine, the Einhell GC-SA 1231/1 Electric 2-in-1 Scarifier And Lawn Aerator is well worth considering. This model works as both a scarifier and a lawn aerator and has a 31 cm width. Pitchfork-style coring aerators are a simple, effective way of aerating small to medium sized lawns. These garden tools are called hollow tine aerators because they have hollow spikes, which remove a core or plug of soil when pulled out of the turf. This results in better aeration, especially on extremely compacted ground, as you’re creating more room in the soil for air to flow. This is another pitchfork-style plug aerator, similar to the Yard Butler aerator we looked at previously. The difference? This aerator is three times the price.
