About this deal

You might be in this for blistering speed, but if ultra-wide coverage is your concern your money is better spent in a different direction. Based on a recommendation of several routers from a 2021 post by RMerlin, I'm close to pulling the trigger on the RT-AC86U. Other Advanced settings include LAN, WAN, and Firewall controls as well as VPN Server and VPN Client settings. In addition to being easy to install and configure, it delivered good all-around throughput performance in our tests and comes bundled with a handful of useful tools for optimal performance, including embedded support for WTFast game acceleration and Adaptive QoS bandwidth prioritization. This router even comes with a free two-week trial of Gamers Private Network (GPN), powered by WTFast.

I live in a 1000 sqft apartment but have a backyard and have been having a lot of issues with reception out there. Obviously if I decide to go with a wireless mesh I’d be better off with two AX92Us, but I’m leaning towards going with a single router with 20 to 30 Wifi 5 clients. I believe the original US AX58U exclusivity was to test the waters and see RMA rates between resellers/units etc. i need to get to know my router better and see how i can achieve best results before i get my rc ac68u that i just bought and is on its way from the US so i can set up my Aimesh.

In the gaming bracket it's not overly expensive, and despite running only twin radios it pulls out impressive speed and coverage, backing up Asus' marketing bombast. NitroQAM™ (1024-QAM) technology delivers the ultimate 5GHz quad-stream (4x4) speeds of up to 2167Mbps, giving RT-AC86U combined total speed of 2917Mbps. In the quest to keep cash registers ringing, ASUS is following a similar route taken by NETGEAR with its R7000P, by refreshing the design with Broadcom’s newest AC radios and a faster CPU. Broadcom engineers aren't stupid, but it's definitely a more cost centric design relative to the previous ACW2 BCM4365/E.

dual-core processor brings its computational capability to the next level, enabling USB data transfers of up to 110MB/s and router download/upload speeds (WAN-LAN throughput) of up to 1600Mbps 2. The advertised Mac Time Machine feature doesn’t work easily at all and the eventual work around left to be found by the user (not Asus help desk) ends up shutting down the wifi signal causing continued failure. This router also has still unresolved software issue mostly affecting user scripts in Asuswrt-Merlin and firmware components like Traffic Analyzer, Web History or Client List. At 30 feet, the RT-AC86U garnered 150Mbps, once again besting the Linksys WRT32X and the Synology RT2600ac, but trailing the D-Link DIR-885L/R. This gives you a super-fast option for printing, storing files on an external hard drive or transferring files. The router's vertical mounting stand limits where you can locate it, and its file transfer speeds were merely average, but neither gripe prevents the RT-AC86U from garnering our Editors' Choice for midrange routers. Since you have wired backhaul, you can just reverse the roles of the current hardware units and you’re set. GHz average throughput of 164 Mbps downlink and 263 Mbps up, landed the 86U in sixth and third positions. To help out, Asus incorporated a functionality that, when you mouse over a setting, a question mark pops up. However, if you really have a large amount of clients (like more than 50 **active* at the same time**) I’d recommend getting an enterprise router.

It's fairly logical that 6705, 6710, and even 6715 were intended for newer hardware and not something essentially developed for an older Gen 2 Penta core design circa 2016. I’d *love* to see you post a step-by-step document – preferably with a video clip – of yourself doing that file copy at >800 Mbps. In your case, AiMesh would only help unify all of the APs’ Wi-Fi networks into a single one, instead of multiple networks (of the same name). I prefer routers with more LAN ports and support Link Aggregation to combine two LAN ports into a single super-fast connection. In any case, it’s a good router to get, if need be you can get an RT-AC68U later and extend the network via AiMesh.Note in the GIF below how I could get close to 500Mbps and I wasn’t sitting anywhere near the router, which is in my basement. GHz throughput of 64 Mbps downlink and 62 Mbps uplink slotted the AC86U in second and fourth place in the charts. But since it’s only three streams, it can’t reach the same throughput as four-stream products, like NETGEAR’s R7800 and ASUS’ own RT/GTAC5300. The RT-AC86U has 4x4 (four transmit antennas and four receive antennas) capability on 5GHz and 3x3 on 2.

AT BEST that implies an additional 50% throughput, though – which would come out to 170 Mbps or so, well under a quarter of what you’re claiming.Whether you're gaming online in a heated competition or streaming a live event in 4K UHD, lag and buffering are simply not an option. After comparing it to other mesh systems and routers, this seemed like it would be faster/cheaper (thank you for your review and benchmarks, one of the only ones I could find comparing to other mesh systems).
