About this deal

Just when I thought Brady was the guy, Gunner will do or say something that would sway me. They did that for like 10 times, something my fragile little heart wasn't prepared for. Uncle Boone continued, “You’ll need to show her around at school on Monday. Y’all are in the same grade, and we made sure they put her in several of your classes so you could help her out.” I had a feeling Brady already knew all this. The information was for me. This was also shown by the fact that, like Maggie, Willa had no female friends. The girls at school ignored her because they were jealous of her looks and her relationship with Gunner and Brady (who were two of the hottest boys at school, of course). These girls only appeared in the story because they were used by the male football players for sex or decorative arm candy at parties/events. They even use the term ‘used’ themselves. Gunner himself is shown ‘using’ a girl named Serena - getting her to sit on his lap in the cafeteria and making out with her in purposeful locations - to upset a girl he made out who was ‘getting the wrong idea’ about their relationship. He also took a girl to a dance just so he could get a bj and sex from her. He blatantly stated so… so I think that was excuse enough for why I found it hard to muster any sort of affection for him. However, Gunner also slut-shames his own mother and accuses her of lying about being raped (because she would enjoy that sort of attention). Yes, he was verbally abused by his family. Yes, he had an awful home life and unacceptable upbringing but nothing excuses his behaviour, especially since Brady was ready and willing to help him through his problems if he had just told someone. Of course, the first person he opened up to was the hot new girl who wanted to get into the pants of as well. Ugh. So that’s why I had a hard time liking West a.k.a. the male mc. I could sympathize with him and all he was going through, yes, but that’s not an excuse to behave so poorly. He was in pain but, after that first encounter with Maggie (female mc) the least he could do was to apologize to her. That’s it. She was a really sweet to Maggie, even in a time she was hurting herself and trying to make it through her husband’s illness. She didn’t make many appearances in the book but I did like her and the one time dad was able to appear in the book and be able to enjoy the family, even when he wasn’t feeling great at all. Again, this is another situation that I’d like to say more but that is giving too much of the plot away and I have given a lot of that away as it is (in my opinion).

sure how to convince him that I’d keep to myself, that I wouldn’t bother him or change his life. “Shit, this ain’t gonna be easy. You’re—” He paused and let out a laugh that didn’t sound like he meant it. “This shit is gonna be worse than I thought. Least you could have helped me out and been ugly.” Excuse me? Brady frowned. “Just don’t draw attention to yourself. My momma finally got the daughter she never had, but it don’t make shit easier for me. I have a life, you know.” I simply nodded. I was sure he had a life. He was tall with dark hair and light hazel eyes, and his wide shoulders hinted at the muscles underneath his T-shirt. No doubt girls loved him. I had no intention of being in his way, but I could see how my coming into his home and taking his room would make it seem He was hurting. I had to remember that. He was lost and hurting and seeking comfort. I should stop him. I shouldn’t let him do something he’d regret tomorrow. But I couldn’t."Maggie just needs to be there for him. Whenever. Wherever. Whatever... If he needs her to hold his hand while he's getting off with some other random girl, I'm sure she would have been up for it. Because only she can save him and blah blah blah. Seriously, that's not even the worst of it. Because later on, we also have to deal with their blossoming unhealthy, possessive, and controlling relationship. I mean West doesn't even want Maggie to speak to anyone else because that would be... um... a step in the right direction considering she hasn't spoken to anyone besides him in years?? And just when I think Mrs. Abbi Glines gets it, and she's showing us that this isn't what a normal, high school relationship looks like by allowing Maggie to break it off with him, we find out it's because Maggie doesn't think this behavior is okay... well, at least not when West hasn't said that he loves her. Because we all know, those three words make volatile relationships worth staying in. I didn’t dislike her, I sympathized with her but one of my two main struggles I had with her was that what she thought was not reflected on how she acted. I mean, in her head she’s very straightforward and conscious and all of that but she acted like a little puppy. It frustrated me. She didn’t need to talk just turn around and go. She didn’t need to put up with anyone’s crap and she thought that way but still stayed. Daaaaaaamn, this was good. I love a good broken hero YA, but to have both main characters dealing with truly heartbreaking situations, just made me devour this! As West s pain becomes too much to handle, he knows he needs to talk to someone about his father so in the dark shadows of a post-game party, he opens up to the one girl who he knows won t tell anyone else. This wasn’t home. Nothing ever would be again. And besides, I didn’t want a home—the word came with memories too painful to think about.

I only remembered my cousin Brady a little. He had never played with me at family events, was always running off with one of the buddies he’d brought with him.To deal with his sadness and anger over his father's looming death, West uses women for sex and then promptly discards them. Referring to these women as “friends with benefits,” he is known for his promiscuous behavior and inability to stay with a girl for longer than a few weeks, or an evening. Maggie, on the other hand, is not interested in casual hook-ups. Her recent move to Lawton hasn't drawn her out of her shell, and despite the fact that all the boys in Lawton have their eye on her, she refuses to speak to any of them. And girls liked his looks, too. “Let’s talk football,” Ryker Lee announced as he walked into our circle and sat down on the tailgate beside Brady and Ivy. “I’d rather talk about the fact that you shaved your hair,” Brady replied with a grin. Last year Ryker had been determined to grow out his hair and get dreads. I’d been surprised to see he’d cut his hair short the first day of practice. He’d gone with his family to visit his grandmother in Georgia, so we hadn’t seen him the last few weeks of summer. “I got tired of it. I’ll have dreads when I play pro. Right now I don’t need that shit,” he replied, and ran his hand over his head. Looked like he was gonna say something else, but then he stood up and just started staring out over the field and grinning like an Simon & Schuster UK Ltd are committed to sourcing paper that is made from wood grown in sustainable forests and supports the Forest Stewardship Council, the leading international forest certification organisation. They wanted me to like it here—there was a certain hopefulness in their eyes. I didn’t remember what hope felt like. It had been so long since I’d hoped for anything.
