Matt earns scholarships and is preparing to leave Crow Lake when he becomes involved with Pye’s daughter, Marie. The father is the first of his farming clan to have finished secondary school; his job in a bank has justified the sacrifices made to get him there. Do you think Kate’s resentment and distaste toward Marie will lessen as she rebuilds her relationship with Matt? I got hooked on it many years ago when we dug a pond in our garden and filled it full of tap water, and in four days it was full of life.I have worried about myself because I feel so much sympathy and experience very real heartbreak for her fictional characters, when I sometimes gloss over real world problems.

It is this which is her salvation, in the end – she is able to look at her ‘picture of how things are’, and see that it is wrong. I remember being in my late twenties with a job, a marriage, a mortgage, and a baby on the way pretty much having these same thoughts. Twenty years later, the sacrifices they made and the promises they broke would continue to reverberate through their lives and the quiet rural community of Crow Lake.
The story dips back and forth in time, neatly placed by inscrutable headlines from the Tamiskaming Speaker at the head of each chapter: "Toronto Board of Trade Visiting Northern Ontario", "Speckled Trout Season Starts on Saturday". Was Jake surprised because he had never considered the possibility that he might be a less than perfect shot? None of them could have expected the tumultuous times ahead—least of all Kate’s older brothers, Matt and Luke. The combination of orphan protagonists and effortless prose makes this an irresistible first effort. It’s a small town where the summers are green and young boys fish in Crow Lake and the winters are brutally cold and the roads are so deeply covered with snow that they keep people in.

Clearly the symbol of a bond of closeness between Matt and Kate but the strong emphasis placed on biological study is evident. This passage tells us volumes about the Morrison clan -- their unquenchable passion for learning squashed down hard by an iron sense of duty. She says at one point that she had never expected to admire anyone again; if Matt could turn out to have feet of clay, what hope was there for anyone else?
