Narwhal and Jelly Series by Ben Clanton - Goodreads
When a rogue current carries him away from home, he breaches the surface and spots a sparkling creature that looks just like him. Narwhal and Jelly spread some holiday cheer (and warm waffle pudding) in the festive fifth book of this blockbuster graphic novel series!Narwhals regularly spend their winter in Davis Strait and Baffin Bay, which has less than 5% open water, due to pack ice. They are sometimes referred to as the ‘ unicorn of the sea‘, as the male Narwahl has a single long sword-like spiral tusk, which protrudes from their heads. Narwhal loves Halloween — it’s a great excuse to dress up in a spooky and silly costume, like a ghost, a mermaid, a banana or maybe even Marlow the Mustachioed Moose.

This gives tusks a sensitivity that could help narwhals detect changes in their environment such as temperature or even the water's saltiness. Inside, a harmonious blend of brilliant colors depicted in soft hues portray an enchanting array of creatures and places: rainbow fish and silver-white jellyfish, flitting through a pale blue sea; round white eyes, floating in the darkness of night; and vibrant butterflies flitting over jade colored fields. In one of the mini tales, Narwhal invites a variety of creatures to join his pod but is oblivious to Jelly’s increasing annoyance at feeling excluded from the group. We see him first grow up in the ocean, trying to be like a narwhal, and failing, but he is trying his best and I loved that the narwhal friends didn't mind him not being one of them.
However, sometimes multiple pods will meet in social groups and bays, reaching into the many hundreds, or thousands. They are extremely difficult to see or study, as no other whales live so far north, in the most remote and coldest parts of the ocean. Exuberant Narwhal and skeptical Jelly test the waters of adding a new friend to their pod when they meet Otty the super-adventurous otter in the fourth book of this blockbuster early graphic novel series! Kelp is born to Narwhals, and is loved and accepted, though s/he never completely fits in, he can't swim well. Narwhal live in the cracks of dense pack ice for most of the year in the Greenlandic and Canadian Arctic.

In a completely non-didactic way, Sima explores being part of a community, being different, and being yourself.Ben Clanton showcases the joys of friendship and the power of believing in yourself and others through this irresistible duo. In the hilarious ninth book of this blockbuster graphic novel series, Narwhal’s sweet tooth leads to some very funny feelings! I can see using with younger students relating to friendship and community building, yet with older students it could be read into much more about identity, who we are, how we find our true selves, and acceptance. Na gerai, jis šiek tiek skiriasi nuo kitų narvalų: nemėgsta jų maisto, nėra toks geras plaukikas ir net jo iltis trumpesnė.
