I liked how Hiccup used his language skills, the humor when someone else tried to speak dragonese (without success), the evolution of the relationship between the boy and his father and the nice change of scenery with the Romans (a romanced one of course).

Hiccup lives in a world where you can only gain respect by being strong and uber masculine, but his other qualities are what saves him and the others constantly. Haddock III was an awesome sword-fighter, a dragon-whisperer and the greatest Viking Hero who ever lived. Cressida wrote and illustrated her first picture book, Little Bo Peeps Library Book for Hodder Children's Books in 1998. Later during another lesson, Hiccup and Fishlegs are kidnapped by poorly dressed Romans trying to look like Bog-Burglars to start a blood feud. She was convinced that there were dragons living on this island, and has been fascinated by dragons ever since. When Hiccup’s dragon Toothless is captured by Romans, only Hiccup and his friend Fishlegs can rescue him.

Also the author of picture books, Cressida has won the Nestle Children's Book Prize 2006 and has been shortlisted for many others. It offers a challenging read to 11-year-olds, and rewards reading aloud, especially for those who relish an element of theatre at story time. Cressida is an ambassador for the National Literacy Trust and the Reading Agency, a Trustee of World Book Day and a founder patron of the Children's Media Foundation. While trying to board an harmless ship with Fishlegs and their two useless dragons, they end in front of a small Roman army. Hiccup, the unlikely hero of the story, struggles with a strong father figure and a naughty bite-sized dragon, gets himself in increasingly deadly situations and - somehow - with the help (or in spite of the hindrance) of his friends manages to survive. The books are relatively harmless, I suppose, though the genders stereotypes are rather a bore until Kamakaze turns up.

Hiccup, along with his friends, gets into scrapes because he is not that talented at being a Viking - the problems start when he and his friend Fishlegs attempt rather foolhardily to board a peaceable fishermen's boat and pick the wrong vessel, and from then on disasters of hilarious proportions come thick and fast. Hiccup's memoirs look back to when Hiccup was just an ordinary boy, and finding it very hard to be a Hero. He is an incredible actor and I loved the way he changed his voices with so many characters, it was the perfect sound for his story! The kidnappers take the boys to Fort Sinister, a base of operations for the Roman Empire in the Archipelago. The stunned Fat Consul gives him his Roman Shield, while the Thin Prefect gives Hiccup back his How to Speak Dragonese book. Also, is anyone just utterly disappointed with Toothless and find him annoying to the point of wanting the wee little shite to just die?
